Buckwheat honey is the outlier of the honey world — dark, almost black, with a bold malty flavor that tastes more like molasses than anything delicate. It comes from bees that work the small white flowers of buckwheat plants during a brief early summer bloom, producing a nectar so concentrated that the resulting honey is unmistakably its own thing. Our raw buckwheat honey is sourced from beekeepers across the United States, minimally filtered, and packed in 11 oz glass jars exactly as the bees made it.

The Stout of Honey

Dark, almost black. Molasses-like depth. Malty, earthy, robust flavor that doesn't apologize for being intense. Buckwheat honey is what people who love dark beer and chewable red wine reach for when they want honey with character.

What Makes Our Buckwheat Honey Special?

  • Bold, distinctive flavor: Rich and malty with deep molasses undertones and a slight earthiness — nothing like a clover or wildflower honey. It's a honey for people who want something with character.
  • Minimally filtered: Never heated or over-processed. The pollen, natural enzymes, and full flavor of the buckwheat bloom are preserved in every jar.
  • Deep dark color: That near-black amber color is characteristic of buckwheat honey's high concentration of plant compounds — it looks as bold as it tastes.
  • Natural crystallization: Crystallization happens — that's what real honey does. Buckwheat honey will eventually set firm. A gentle warm water bath brings it back to liquid without damaging anything.
  • Star K Kosher certified: Certified Kosher for households and recipes where that matters.
  • 11 oz jar: Packaged in a reusable glass jar.

If you've been looking for a honey that actually stands up to strong flavors, this one is worth having in your kitchen.

How to use: Buckwheat honey belongs anywhere a bold sweetener makes sense. Stir it into black tea, drizzle it over aged cheddar or sharp goat cheese, use it in place of molasses in baked goods, or add it to a BBQ glaze for smoked meats. It holds its own in savory cooking in a way lighter honeys cannot.

Buckwheat Honey FAQs

What does Buckwheat Honey taste like?

Bold, malty, and deeply sweet, closer to dark molasses than anything floral. There's an earthy undertone underneath that lingers on the palate. If your taste runs toward dark beer, strong coffee, aged cheese, or chewable red wine, Buckwheat will feel familiar the second it hits your tongue. This is honey for people who want their honey to actually announce itself, not the one for delicate scones or afternoon tea.

How is Buckwheat Honey different from regular honey?

Almost everything about it is different. The color is near-black rather than amber. The flavor is malty and molasses-deep rather than sweet and floral. The texture is thick and assertive rather than light and pourable. Buckwheat comes from the small white flowers of the buckwheat plant during a brief early summer bloom, and the resulting nectar is so concentrated that it produces a honey unmistakably its own. If you've only ever had clover or wildflower, this will be a different conversation entirely.

Does Buckwheat Honey crystallize, and does it set differently than other honey?

Yes, and faster than most raw varietals. Buckwheat sets into a thick, dense paste rather than the fine-grained crystallization you see in lighter honeys, which is part of its character rather than a defect. To return it to liquid, place the sealed jar in a bowl of warm water and let it loosen slowly. Don't microwave it. The flavor and quality come back fully intact, and the molasses-like depth is unchanged.

Can you bake with Buckwheat Honey?

It's one of the best honeys for baking precisely because its flavor is so close to dark molasses. It works naturally in gingerbread, dark breads, spice cakes, and bran muffins, anywhere the recipe is already asking for depth and warmth. It also keeps baked goods moist for longer, the way molasses does. Beyond baking, it shines as a glaze for smoked meats, drizzled over aged cheddar or sharp goat cheese, and stirred into strong black tea.

How should I store raw honey?

Keep your honey at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, with the lid screwed on tight. A pantry shelf or cabinet works beautifully. Honey is one of the few foods that does not spoil, so there is no need to refrigerate it. In fact, the cold will speed up crystallization. If your jar does begin to set, that is normal and easily reversed with a warm water bath. Use a clean, dry spoon every time, and your honey will hold its character for years.

Buckwheat is a miss for me

Buckwheat is a miss for me. It is very thick and has a bitter element. Nevertheless I have made your honey a staple in my diet.

Hi Cathy, Thank you for taking the time to share this, and for your honesty. We're so glad honey has found a place in your kitchen.

Buckwheat is the boldest honey we offer. It's dark and malty, closer to molasses than to clover, and it can surprise people who are expecting something delicate. Where it really shines is in baking. That depth holds up beautifully in gingerbread, honey cakes, marinades, and glazes, where a lighter honey would disappear.

We've collected our favorite ideas in the baking with honey section of our blog: https://00albqvfb29kcooz-27373863010.shopifypreview.com/blogs/honey-recipes

If you'd like a lighter everyday honey for tea and toast, our Wildflower is a lovely place to start, and we'd be happy to point you to it. Thank you again for being part of our hive.

Did not care for the flavor, too stronmg for my tastes.

Hi Jay, Sorry you did not like the buckwheat honey. It's one of those honeys that people love or just don't love. It has a very strong flavor of molasses, and what's amazing is how tiny the flower is that makes that strong flavor! Anyway, we have no other honey like this in our collection and I hope you will try out another varietal. Blueberry is loved. I hope you will try it.

I've been buying buckwheat honey for years at the recommendation of my children's pediatrician. If you don't know already, buckwheat honey has medicinal benefits during cold and cough season. My kids are now young adults and I send them some at the start of every winter! It's a staple in my household.
